THE TAIWANESE WEEK

“We are on a five-day week” Jo, the English professor, told us. I was wondering what she meant. Then I got it. Most public offices, schools, universities, banks, etc. work from Monday to Friday. It seems that they are describing themselves in contrast to what they know well, mainland China, where the work never ends. But the truth is that if you go downtown, every single day of the week it looks the same: all the businesses are opened, and everybody is on the street. It’s common to see “24 hrs” signs, even at an acupuncturist clinic. We realized with Mike that having no Christian influence means no culture of a resting day. We believe they are missing something real important! Even in terms of productivity, if you are rested, you work better, right?
